Natural honey is used in the kitchen, in beauty treatments, disease and wound treatments and as well as for assistance in weight loss. It is an energy source and it is rich in vitamins and minerals and has anti – inflammatory properties and anti-fungal. Real honey is usually very expensive and imitations were developed in order to offer a less expensive alternative to honey.
There are three main basis classes of honey – natural, altered and artificial. The natural one is the pure one that the bees make; the altered one contains natural honey and some extra ingredients and the artificial one is made from sugar syrup, additives and food colorants.
How can one figure out what type of honey one buys?
Read the label – the producers should write every ingredient from the jar. In that case when the honey is not pure, on the label one should as well write the percentage of natural honey from the recipient.
Rub some honey between two fingers – until it disintegrates; a part of it will be absorbed in the skin if it is real honey; pure honey is very good for the hands and the skin. Pure honey is not sticky. If the fingers remain sticky it means that it has sugar or artificial sweetener in it.
Put some drops on a paper or handkerchief – Pure honey will not tear the paper for a quiet long period, as it does not contain water.
Throw some honey near some ants – the bees instinctively built their hives in the trees or between rocks. They add an additive in the honey in order to protect themselves from the ants and other predators. The ants will not come closer to real honey.
Mix the honey with a yolk of an egg – If the honey is pure the yolk will look as it looks when it is boiled.
Fill a glass with water and add a spoon of honey – The pure honey does not dissolve in water and it will remain at the bottom of the glass.
Put it on a slice of bread – Natural honey will harden the bread while the artificial one will just wet it as it contains water.
See if it crystallizes in time – Fresh and pure honey will crystallize while the artificial one will remain unchanged in time.
