Is the good sleeping helpful in avoiding extra kilos? Is it possible that the lack of sleep “help” you gather some more kilos?
Just think for a second – if you feel sleepy at work, maybe you are tempted to drink a coffee or more and also have a donut that will fill you with energy. Later you may skip the gym and instead buy some fast food for your dinner at home as you do not really feel like cooking. When one finally gets to bed, one feels too tensioned to sleep.
It is a vicious circle and at the end of the day, the lack of sleep sabotages your silhouette and your health. Everything starts quiet innocent as when the body is deprived of sleep and the level of energy is low, you automatically look for a bag of chips or other foods that you enjoy.
The long term results are not very nice. The extra kilos gather as the food choices one makes are also associated with the lack of physical exercises, which creates the perfect conditions for obesity and the lack of sleep.
The connection between the sleep and the diet
Maybe one has not heard yet about the sleep diet that suggests that one can lose weight during sleeping. This thing is sort of true. This does not necessarily mean that if you sleep you lose weight. It means that if you sleep too little you may get fat, as if you do not have enough of quality sleep, the metabolism will not function properly.
Usually one human being needs 7.5 hours of sleep per night; if you already sleep that much, another half an hour of sleep will not do that much. Anyhow, if you are used with sleeping 5 hours per night and start sleeping 7, you will start losing weight. Everything is bound to the hormones during the night.
The two hormones are the key – the ghrelin and the leptin. Ghrelin is the “go” hormone that tells the body when to eat and when you lack sleep, you have more ghrelin. While the leptin is the hormone that tells the body when to stop to eat and when one lacks sleep, one has less leptin. More ghrelin and less leptin means gaining weight.
What can one do with the lack of sleep?
First of all think about how many hours you sleep and compare them to how many hours from them is a quality sleep. One should adopt a better sleeping hygiene. For starters give up at the afternoon coffee as it will make you not sleep soundly. The physical exercises also help one sleep better. The best time to make them is couple of hours before sleeping. Anyhow, this depends from person to person, the most important thing being to make physical exercise.
Beware of what you eat before going to bed. Pizza and beer are not an advisable mix. Neither are the very copious meals. It is better to take some healthy bites and a light meal. The heavy and consistent meals taken before sleeping, increase the possibility of stomach aches and will impede you take a good night sleep.
But what if one sleeps enough hours but one still wakes up very sleepy? One should take this issue to the doctor. A specialist in sleep will be able to provide you with all the details of your sleep and what one should do in order to sleep better. They can put up a plan for you so that you will take as many hours of good sleep as possible, and maybe you will be able to lose some weight as well.
